Landfills are an integral component of waste management systems and serve a significant role in the disposal of garbage generated by human activities. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection manages and regulates Florida’s landfills, which are an integral aspect of the state’s waste management system (FDEP).

Each year, Florida produces a substantial amount of waste, and landfills serve a critical role in handling this waste. In 2020, the state generated approximately 28 million tonnes of municipal solid trash, according to the FDEP (MSW). Around 61% of this was disposed of in landfills, while the remainder was recycled, composted, or burned.

The FDEP regulates more than 80 active landfills throughout the state. Some of these landfills are small and serve a single municipality, whilst others are big and serve numerous counties. The North Broward County Landfill is the largest landfill in Florida, with an area of about 600 acres and a capacity of over 34 million tonnes.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) has strong laws in place to guarantee that landfills in Florida are designed, constructed, and operated in a manner that protects human health and the environment. These standards govern all aspects of landfill operations, from site selection and design to gas and leachate control.

Site selection is one of the most important parts of landfill design. Landfills must be positioned in places that are not prone to flooding or other natural disasters, and they must maintain a safe distance from residential areas, bodies of water, and other sensitive habitats. Moreover, landfills must have a liner system to avoid waste contamination of the surrounding soil and groundwater.

Once a landfill is operational, the FDEP requires operators to monitor a variety of factors to ensure the landfill is functioning as planned. This involves monitoring the groundwater quality surrounding the dump, landfill gas emissions, and the amount of waste being disposed of.

Florida’s landfills serve an important role in handling the state’s organic waste. Organic waste, such as food waste and yard trash, is a large component of Florida’s waste output. Nevertheless, when organic waste is transferred to landfills, it can produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

Many landfills in Florida are implementing organic waste diversion programs to solve this problem. These programs try to divert organic waste from landfills and instead treat it through composting or anaerobic digestion. This not only cuts methane emissions but also provides important resources, such as compost and biogas.

Management of landfill gas is another crucial part of waste management. As garbage decomposes, landfills release methane, which can be recovered and used as a fuel source. Several Florida landfills have adopted landfill gas recovery systems, which catch methane and use it to generate electricity or heat.

Also, the FDEP mandates landfill operators to manage leachate, a liquid produced when water comes into contact with waste in a landfill. Leachate can contain chemicals that can be detrimental to the environment, thus it must be treated before it is discharged. In Florida, landfill operators must collect and treat leachate before releasing it into the environment.

Even though there are numerous rules in place to ensure the safe and effective management of landfills in Florida, there are still worries about their influence on the environment and human health. The possibility of groundwater contamination is one of the major worries.

Yet, accidents can occur. Landfills are meant to prevent the garbage from contaminating the surrounding land and groundwater. If a landfill liner breaks or a leachate collecting system is not maintained properly, toxins can reach the groundwater, which can be detrimental to the environment and public health.
